James Flint in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, 1820-1821.

 Abstract:  Charles Roscoe Howland (1871-1946) was a United States Army officer, lawyer, author, and amateur genealogist. He served as a judge advocate of the United States Army and as commander of the disciplinary barracks at Alcatraz Island, and taught in the Army General Staff School. Among his writings are "The Road to One Man Rule" and a family history. The collection consists of genealogical materials, journals, appointment books, manuscripts of books, and scrapbooks.

 Abstract:  John Cumming Johnson (1828-1892) moved to Memphis, Tennessee, from Franklin, Ohio, in 1854. In 1856 he married Mary Anne Elizabeth Fisher (1834-1883). They were active in many philanthropic enterprises, especially education. Johnson and his son, William Cumming Johnson (1870-1958), were involved in the cotton trade. William Cumming Johnson was a major stockholder in the Tennessee Fiber Company and had extensive real estate dealings in Florida. In 1877 he married Sarah Evangeline Harvey (1870-1930). Their son, William Cumming Johnson, Jr. (born 1904), married a great-granddaughter of Noah Mayo Farrin and Agnes Saline Faris Farrin. The collection consists of diaries of John and Elizabeth Johnson, correspondence of the Farrin and Johnson families, genealogical material on the Johnson, Fisher, Plume, Van Wagenen, Schenck, and Brown families, two memory books of William Johnson, Jr., an index to the memory books of Evangeline Johnson, and miscellaneous documents including clippings, estate papers of John and William Johnson, memorials for John and Elizabeth Johnson, and a key to the family code. Major topics of the papers include World War I and women's rights.

 Abstract:  John Weld Brown (b. 1828) was a farmer, trader, and gold miner in and around Nevada City, Marysville, and Yuba City, California. The collection consists of letters from Brown to relatives in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, and in Rhode Island, relating to his journey from Cleveland, Ohio, to Nevada City, California, 1851-1852, and his subsequent activities, and touching upon the hardships of the trip by boat to the West, the economic situation in California, and personal and family matters.

The collection consists of personal correspondence of members of the Brown family, poetry, grade reports, a cash sheet detailing school expenses, a Union Army payroll sheet, and notices and memoranda from the Northern Ohio Sanitary Fair (1864).

Includes account books of E. A. Brown & Brothers Company and other papers of Brown's son, Ephraim A. Brown; papers of other family members, and plans and charts of North Bloomfield, Ohio.
